ANPP faction reaffirms Useni, suspends Etiebet
From Mohammed Abubakar, Abuja

THERE appears no end yet to the leadership crisis within All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) as the group loyal to erstwhile Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Gen. Jeremiah Useni at the weekend re-affirmed its claim to the leadership of the party.

In a demonstration of its claim, the group rose from an emergency National Executive Committee NEC) meeting in Abuja with a 15-point statement, restating the alleged suspension of the party's chairman, Chief Don Etiebet and annulling the suspension of the party's National Secretary, Sani el-Katuzu.

The statement, signed by Useni himself as the Acting Chairman and Mr. Melvillo Ebo as Assistant National Secretary claimed that all NEC members who were present at the meeting had resolved not to take directives, orders or dictates whatsoever from "the suspended chairman, Chief Etiebet" from now henceforth.

The statement asked ANPP's bankers to abide by the party's constitution to ensure that they do not work in connivance with people not saddled with the party's responsibilities to withdraw monies without recourse to the constitutional mandate of the party.

To ensure full reconciliation within the party, however, the NEC statement directed that all the state chapters of the party earlier dissolved by the Etiebet-led executive be restored and commence their normal responsibilities accordingly. It noted that all suspensions hitherto "unilaterally made are hereby declared null and void and all suspended members are hereby restored to their respective status".

The statement described the "invasion and incursion" on the property and rights of the members of the party at its National Secretariat by the police as an affront on the rights of the law-abiding members of the party.

It therefore asked the police to vacate the premises of the party's National Secretariat and allow political activities to flourish at the place without any hindrance or harassment.

The NEC, the statement maintained, had absolute confidence in the leadership of Gen. J.T. Useni, "the present Acting National Chairman" and would do all things constitutional to give him the maximum co-operation and congenial atmosphere to propel the ANPP ship to greatness and success.

In addition, it lamented the "brazen conduct exhibited by the suspended chairman, describing the action as quite reprehensible, democratically abominable and indeed politically grotesque, reminiscent of Emperor-like tyranny and arrogance".

The statement denied insinuations that the party was in turmoil, adding that happenings within the party in the last few days were in the interest of the survival of the party and its continued relevance, hence its acceptance and endorsement by all the organs of the party.
