LAGOS—LAGOS State Government may scrap the state monthly environmental sanitation exercise if its newly introduced Private Sector Partnership initiative works out well, just as it has threatened to seal off any building or organisation in the state that contravenes the rules guiding the newly introduced exercise.
Deputy Governor, Mr. Femi Pedro, who spoke with newsmen shortly after returning from monitoring last Saturday's environmental exercise said plans had been concluded to commence the new programme on October 1, 2004.
His words: “Having succeeded in the first phase of war against filth in Lagos State, we are commencing a new environmental programme on October 1, 2004 and it is our utmost belief that with the full cooperation of the people including Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), community leaders, youths, local governments, among others we shall succeed again in this new objective as we must not rest on our oars.”
On the new programme, Pedro explained that a number of private sector refuse collectors have been contracted to go from house to house to collect refuse without collecting any money from the people, adding that arrangement has been made where each building under the management of landlord will go and pay into a specified bank account and later issued a receipt.
The receipt, he said, would be an evidence for payment of the collected refuse. Pedro enumerated that a room apartment will be paying N50, monthly, a flat N500 while business organisation will pay an amount ranging from N2,000 and above.
While appealing to the residents of the state to imbibe the culture of keeping a clean environment in their own interest and that of the public, Pedro warned that any building, person(s) found degrading the environment and violating the rules of the new initiative would be arrested or have their premises sealed immediately as the case may be, before appearing in court, and if found guilty would pay fine(s) as imposed by the court.
