Villagers burn three to death, set palace ablaze

By Emma Amaize
Monday, September 27, 2004

WARRI — TENSION mounted, weekend, at Ofagbe in Isoko North local government area where irate villagers burnt three persons, including a teenage girl to death and also set ablaze the palace of the traditional ruler who escaped death by the whiskers.

No fewer than five other persons were also said to have been seriously injured in the clash, said to have been spearheaded by youths who were protesting the alleged involvement of their leaders in ritual murder and other criminal activities. One of those killed is a sister to the royal father.

One Master Collins Umukoro was recently murdered for alleged ritual purposes by some people in Ofagbe and his blood drained for money-making purpose but the suspects were released on bail even after a witness named them to the police. Two other women disappeared in mysterious circumstances from the community some years ago and nothing has been done about them. It is suspected that they were used for rituals.

Guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons were said to have been freely used in the battle by the youths to cleanse the augean stables in the community.

Palace sources said that the police at Ozoro were alerted about the invasion and plan of the youths but they refused to intervene. A police source, however, told Vanguard that the police at Ozoro were skeptical about the matter because some powerful persons in the community wrote higher authorities to transfer the case from the division when the matter that led to the fracas was being investigated.

As at yesterday, traditional rulers from Isoko North and the chairman of the Isoko Development Union, Chief Oghale Ononeme were said to have stepped into the matter to restore peace to the town.
