Traders protest detention of chairman

By Chimaobi Nwaiwu
Monday, September 27, 2004

NNEWI—TRADERS of Tools and Allied Products from Bridge Head Market (popularly known as  Carpenters Tools) weekend protested the arrest and continued detention of their  chairman, Mr Peter Okala by the Police following an alleged petition against him in connection with alleged destruction of stalls being built along service lane of the Onitsha Asaba Express way.  Okala who was the state Govenorship candidate of National Conscience Party (NCP) during the April 19 2003 general election was allegedly arrested when he went to answer the invitation by the State Security Service (SSS), Awka on imminent breakdown of law order in his market.

The placard carrying traders with inscriptions on their placards like, “We need peace in our market, Government must stop fanning the embers of discord in markets”, Nigerian police release our chairman”, “We cannot allow state Government to use market crisis to appoint a caretaker committee Government for our market”, alleged that the state Government wanted to use intimidation to subject their chairman into accepting construction of stalls on top of the existing ones which they rejected since according to them, “the land was bought by us and we constructed the shops without any government assistance”.

Speaking with newsmen during the protest, a trader in the market and chairman of  Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) Anambra State, Mr. Emeka Umeagbalasi said, “Okala was not involved in the attempted destruction of stalls being constructed by Chief Aniekwe for the colanuts traders”, alleging that he was arrested over the crisis that erupted in the market between contractors the state government purportedly gave approval to build stalls on top of the existing one and the owners of the stalls who are protesting the construction.

Also speaking a patron of the market union, Chief Sunday Ezeugonwanne said “there was no basis for our chairman to be arrested because the stall have not been destroyed and the threat to demolish them was not from our traders. We cannot involve ourselves in act of lawlessness like that since we know that any illegal structure is left for the Government to destroy not us”.
