INC Identifies Factors for Under-development From Jaiyeola Andrews in London Political domination facilitated by the ethnicised Nigerian State and oil-based environmental degradation, have been identified as factors responsible for poverty and underdevelopment in the Ijaw Land and the entire Niger Delta region. These factors were identified by the Ijaw National Congress chairman, (INC), Prof. Kimse A.B Okoko at the weekend in London during the fund-raising for the establishment of an Ijaw Resource Centre in Central London organised by Ijaw People Association of Great Britain and Ireland. According to him, "The dominant ethnic groups, who, following the privatisation of the state, use state power for the accumulation of wealth and the benefit of their ethnic homelands, control the Nigerian state. This is made worse by the system of federalism characterised by the preponderance of the central government and nationalisation of resources and wealth". Okoko criticised a situation whereby the proceeds from oil and gas explored in the Niger Delta Region is used for the development of other areas to the detriment of the region, adding that it was unfair and the situation should be reversed. The INC president equally flayed oil companies operating in Niger Delta Region for contributing to its poverty and underdevelopment through environmental devastation, adding that the multinational has failed to balance the objectives of their business with its cost to the environment.
