Why I Won't Support National Conference, By Okorocha
From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City
Most of the people at the forefront of the agitation for the convocation of a National Conference or Sovereign National Conference (SNC) are either selfish or too comfortable to preside over such a confereence or set a truly patriotic agenda for Nigeria.
Presidential adviser on inter-party affairs, Chief Rochas Okorocha, made this assertion, at the weekend, while explaining his opposition to the SNC call, saying he would give his backing only to a national conference that is composed of the really disadvantaged section of the population.
Rochas, who is also the president of Rochas Okorocha Foundation, spoke, Satur, day at the Benson Idahosa University (BIU) maiden convocation ceremony in Benin-City, where he was a special guest, alongside other local and international guests, including Edo State Deputy Governor, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, the proprietor of Convenant University, Rev.(Dr) David Oyedepo, and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwase II.
The presiding bishop of Church of God Mission International, Rev.(Dr) Mrs Margaret Idahosa, has become the first woman chancellor of a university in Nigeria, following her installation as BIU Chancellor at the week-end.
Okorocha, who charged the graduating students, and Nigerian youths in general, to regard Nigerians from the 36 states as brothers and sisters and "refuse to be put down by the seeming" socio-economic problems prevailing in the country but to face the situation with faith and courage, stressed: "If you have a Concorde, I mean those are filled full, then I'd say unequivocally, you can't fix Nigeria."
He said he would only support an SNC on certain conditions, including that it should "be a National Conference of unemployed youths; if you want to have a conference, let it be a National Conference involving those whose children cannot pay school fees..."
He noted that cademics in Nigeria still have every cause to raise their heads up high because they form an invaluable part of the nation's foundation as the middle class of the society. "If we make the mistake of destroying the middle class, then the counrty is in serious trouble.
