Unemployment: Gowon Challenges Federal Government From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) has frowned at the increasing number of unemployed youths and accordingly challenged the Federal Government to take positive action to solve the lingering problem. Gowon gave the federal authorities the task while responding to a question asked during the 16th Industrial Training Fund (ITF) National conference and exhibition which ended in Port Harcourt, weekend. The former Head of State was asked on ways of tackling unemployment in the country especially those who completed the mandatory NYSC, a programme introduced during his administration. Gowon who had missed the opening session of the ITF Conference was in Port Harcourt to declare the Conference closed said his administration had developed plan for youth employment in the country hence the floating of the NYSC scheme. "The second national development plan was to ensure that we reconstruct the country damaged as the result of the civil war. "Infact, the national development plan was to lay the foundation of Nigeria industrial take-off, with that one, employment would have been made available, job created in various areas not only in the public sector but in the private sector. "It would have gathered the young people who are looking for job not only the graduates but those who did not get opportunity to go to the University". He called on President Olosegun Obasanjo and his Lieutenants to stimulate the economy, generate jobs, and encourage both public and private enterprises for the sake of creating employment for the youths in the country.
