Electoral Reforms, Serious Assignment, Says Nnamani From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu Enugu State governor, Dr Chimaroke Nnamani has urged members of the Senate Committee on the Independent Electoral commission to see the proposed electoral reforms as serious business that needed the contributions of all stakeholders to ensure the survival of democracy. He made the call when he received the committee members at government house, saying that proposed debate on the electoral reforms would afford all stakeholders the opportunity to contribute ideas and also express their views on the type of electoral system the nation should adopt. Nnamani, who was represented by his deputy, Chief Okechukwu Itanyi, noted that electoral process that emerged from dialogue and public debate would go a long way towards the sustenance of democracy. He commended the present lawmakers in the National Assembly for their matured approach to issues and responsiveness to the needs and well being of the people. Earlier the chairman of the Senate Committee, Chief David Brigidi told the governor that the visit was part of their oversight tours of institutions under their purview involved in the electoral process. He announced that Enugu has been chosen as one of the centres in the South East to host the public hearing on the electoral reforms. Chief Brigidi explained that the public hearing would among other things, discuss pattern of voting, issue of funding and the degree of independence that would make INEC discharge its statutory functions effectively.
