Stop Campaign of Calumny Against Ngige, CLO Warned
By Abimbola Akosile
Government of Anambra State has called on the Onitsha branch of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) to stop its alleged campaign of calumny against the administration of Governor Chris Ngige over his recent overseas trip and the amount spent on estacode and tickets for the delegation.
In a statement issued, Anambra Government claimed officials of CLO in the State (described as members of AU Progressive Grand Alliance APGA) had targeted the current administration in a smear campaign, through a recent widely-circulated document alleging that Governor Ngige traveled overseas with a 25-man delegation and spent over N300million on flight tickets and estacodes.
In an alleged bid to set the records straight, the statement claimed, "the official delegation of Governor Ngige on visits to some health institutions and communities in the United States of America in search of possible economic ties with Anambra State, as well as his visit to the 10th World Igbo Convention (WIC) in Newark, New Jersey, was nine, the Governor inclusive".
"These were made up of two Commissioners, three Senior Special Assistants, one Special Assistant, and two members of the House of Assembly. One wonders, therefore, where the CLO got its own figure of 25. In all, the trip did not cost more than N8miilion in estacodes and flight tickets. Estacodes were paid for only the number of days the delegates spent in the USA, and these were not more than five working days".
"Also most of the flight tickets were economy tickets. It is therefore curious how the CLO got its spurious figure of over N300million except for the falsehood to discredit the government.
As part of Government's cost-saving measures, Governor Ngige did not travel with some of his key aides. Government hereby re-assures the general public of its determination to manage the resources of the State prudently. Members of the public are therefore enjoined to dis-countenance the CLO and its fabrications", it stated.
