Doctors Paralyse Activities at UBTH From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has almost grounded to a halt following the decision of the hospital's resident doctors not to attend to patients, while protest compulsory deductions from the monthly pay by the Federal Government. Meanwhile, the recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) which ranked Nigeria 157th out of 191 countries, in terms of the available health and medical facilities, has been described as both worrisome and shameful. The industrial action by the medical staff of UBTH at the weekend, which has left the hospital practically empty, is coming at the commencement of the increase in the price of petroleum products by the Federal Government. When THISDAY visited the hospital at the weekend, relatives of patients on admission, before the industrial action began, bemoaned the fate of their loved ones, saying they were at a loss where to transfer the patients since the UBTH happens to be the only hospital members of the general public could readily run in times of emergency or health problem. Although, no statistical data on the number of casualties, as a result of the strike could be obtained due to the same problem, staff sources within the hospital claimed "people have been dying like flies here since this strike began some days ago."
