NEPA Flags Off N25bn Power Station in Ondo

In a bid to increase power supply, the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) has flagged off construction of N25 billion turbine power station at Omotosho, Ondo State.
Performing the ground breaking ceremony at the weekend, the Minister for Power and Steel, Senator Liyel Imoke said drop in Power supply in the last 12 years was because no new power station was built to complement existing ones.
He said the Federal Government had secured credit facility from a Chinese bank to complement domestic financing of the multi-billion naira project to be executed by CMEC International Engineering Limited.
When completed, the project would make use of excess gas being flared and inject more power into the national grid, Imoke said.
According to him, there are six new power stations being undertaken simultaneous in various parts of the country.
They are, Omotosho in Ondo, Afam in Cross River, Papanlato (Ogun State), Kwale in Delta and another in Lagos State.
In his remarks, NEPA Managing Director, Engr. J.D. Makoju said the power station at Omotosho, when completed, would add 335 megawatts to the national grid.
He commended the contractors, CMECSEPCO and the Chinese government for assisting in securing part of funding for the project, saying the authority and government were grateful.
The Executive President of CMEC, CAO Yuejun in his address thanked the government for considering the company fit to handle the project and promised not to disappoint the country.
Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Agagu who initiated the project while in office as the Minister of Power and Steel said the projects were contemplated to boost power supply in the country.
He said that the Chinese contractors had assured to assist in harnessing the heat in the flue gases from the plant for use by local industries.
He appealed to the federal government and NEPA to embark on the installation of the second unit as soon as possible.
The project consultant to CMEC, Mr Billy Aderin told journalists that the contractors were fully ready to start the project immediately with a promise to do a good job.
