Economic Hardships Not Our Heritage - Youth
From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu

As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its 44th independence anniversary, youth in the old eastern region have urged the Federal Government to steer the ship of state away from economic hardship, which has become the "new Nigerian culture", saying it was not among the dreams of the nation's founding fathers.

The call came at the end of the Eastern Youth Convention held in Enugu at the weekend, where youth organisations including the Union of Niger Delta, Niger Delta Youth Congress, Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People, Efik Youth Congress and Igbo Youth Movement converged and analysed the current political, social and economic situations in the land.

"We believe the country is in dire straits at the moment as economic hardship, numerous agitations, political wranglings and insecurity remain the new Nigerian culture.

"This, we believe was not the dream of the founding fathers of this great nation," the youth said in their communiqu.

In the communiqu endorsed by Victor Isong, Jane F. Kragha, Lerbosi Pesobor, Bassey Effiong and Elliot Uko, the youth said the nation's founding fathers laid "a visionary foundation" but lamented that present and past political leaders have betrayed the dream of the patriarchs.

"We therefore believe that now is the time to look dispassionately at the past, present and future direction of our country, in order to steer the ship of state along the path of greatness," the group said.

While reaffirming their faith in the unity of Nigeria, they wondered why President Olusegun Obasanjo "seemed helpless" in the face of unjust and discriminatory policies threatening the corporate existence of Nigeria, citing the banning of non-indigenes from public schools in Zamfara State as an example.
