...Group Appeals for Atiku's Endorsement
From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja
Turaki Vanguard, the leading association in the campaign for the actualisation of the political desire of the Vice President, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, as the President come 2007, has called on President Olusegun Obasanjo to endorse him for continuity of reform programmes of his administration.
In a statement signed by its National Youth Leader, Honourable Oladimeji Fabiyi, the group said in the last five years, the Obasanjo/Atiku administration has embarked on far-reaching reforms which have begun to reshape the dwindling fortunes of the country.
They said such reforms have been hinged on four cardinal areas of accelerated privatisation, liberalisation, private sector development, anti-corruption, transparency and accountability, public sector reforms as well as governance and institutional reforms.
"As a confirmation of the confidence and trust Obasanjo has on Atiku, he has been charged with great responsibilities in virtually every area of governance. He has been in charge of major national institutions responsible for economic policy formation, implementation and coordination through the chairmanship of the National Economic Council, National Council on Privatisation, National Economic Revitalisation Committee and the National Planning Commission.
"Already the privatisation programme under Atiku's leadership has earned the country a significant level of international confidence and acceptance of its efforts at reforms," it said.
"He has contributed immensely to the evolution, development and implementation of a well-defined and well-coordinated economic agenda for this administration.
"It is evident that the Vice President has been working hard and closely with Obasanjo to correct the ills brought about by the misrule of destrucitve military administration", it said and urged Obasanjo to liberalise the political terrain just like he has done in other sectors, through 0which the nation has reaped subtantial benefits.
