Nigeria to Take over CRCs Soon
From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu

Six Community Resource Centre projects funded by the United States of America would be formally handed over to Nigeria on October 1.

This was made known by officer in charge of the project, Mr John Chamberlain, when he paid a courtesy visit to the Enugu State Governor, Dr Chimaroke Nnamani.

Chamberlain said so far, 20,000 Nigerians have been trained in Information and Computer Technology at the CRCs located at Abeokuta, Abuja, Bauchi, Calabar, Enugu and Kaduna.

He said his mission was to inform Nnamani of the formal handover date of the centre and appealed for government support.

In his remarks, Nnamani expressed gratitude to the U.S. government for its interest in the education of Nigerians, noting with satisfaction the positive impact the CRC has made in training many Nigerians in computer and information technology skills, adding that the centres have fulfilled the vision for which they were established.

Nnamani said CRCs have also helped to expose many people to the importance of modern technology and expressed hope that children from the rural areas could have access to the centres and benefit from its training programme.

The CRCs were funded by the U.S. government through the Education for Development and Democracy Initiative, an African-led commitment formed to strengthen the educational systems and democratisation process of sub-Saharan Africa.

They were set up purposely to improve the quality of and access to education, enhance the availability of technology, increase citizens' participation in governance and facilitate Africa's transition into the global economy.
