CBN Governor, Minister Commend Union Bank Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Professor Charles Soludo and Minister of Finance, Dr. (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, have commended Union Bank of Nigeria Plc for its laudable achievements in the banking sector. Soludo and Okonjo-Iweala made the commendation separately, while receiving members of the bank's Board of Directors in their offices in Abuja. Soludo noted that Union Bank was in the fore-front of banking in Nigeria, saying the essence of the ongoing banking reforms was to create many more big, strong, reliable banks in which investors would have confidence. He commended the bank for its decision to accommodate other banks in its consolidation efforts and the initiative on Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). In her remarks, Okonjo-Iweala observed that Union Bank was a formidable bank and said a great deal was being expected from the banking sector as a result of the on-going reforms. She stated that necessary steps were being taken to bring down inflation so that interest rate could also come down, disclosing that recent assessment of the economy showed that tremendous progress had been made to curtail inflation to a single digit level. Earlier, Dr. Godwin Oboh, Group Managing Director/Chief Executive, had expressed the bank's appreciation to CBN and Finance Ministry's efforts to uplift the banking sector and the nation's economy.
