Imo
From Christopher Isiguzo in Owerri
Prominent political leaders in Okigwe Senatorial District of Imo State have unanimously endorsed the governorship ambition of Senator Ifeanyi Ararume for the 2007 gubernatoial election.
The politicians under the aegis of Elders and Leaders of Thought of Okigwe with membeship drawn from former and serving membes of the National Assembly, commissioners, special advisers and assistants, local government chairmen, members of federal boards and political office holders from Okigwe zone took the decision to return Ararume as the zone's consensus candidate during their meeting held in Owerri last weekend.
Though, no official communique was issued at the ened of the meeting, competent source told newsmen at the end of the meeting that a lot of issues concerning the zone was discussed, with the governorship topping the list.
The source, pleading anonymity, said though none of the governorship contenders attended the meeting, the political leaders took a critical look at the CV of each of them before taking the decision.
According to the source, no decision has been taken on who should replace the Senator by 2007, but insisted that the Senatorial seat must shift to Okigwe South, having stayed in Okigwe North for eight years.
They urged their sons and daughters currently jostling for the governorship to relax and support the consensus candidate in order to give a formidable challenge to people from other zones.
"We decided to clear the air on this issue of which zone should produce the governor by 2007, since Orlu has also declared their intention for the same position," the source who is a member of the House of Assembly stated.
Lately, the 2007 governorship in Imo State has started to generate some tensions as each of those eyeing the coveted seat has started forming one political group or the other to achieve their aim.
