Future of Tourism Bright - Commissioner
Akwa Ibom
From Christopher Isiguzo in Uyo

Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Tourism and Commerce, Mrs. Akon Eyakenyi, has said the future of tourism in the state is bright, as it entails looking beyond crude oil for a more reliable source of revenue.

She made this call at a joint press conference with her counterparts in state ministries of culture and information and youths and sports, Engr. Patrick Ekpotu and Dr. Chris Ekong.

She stressed that tourism can be a direct avenue of attracting foreign investments rather than continual search for rural investors

Eyakenyi posited that tourism was one of the world's largest industries and one of the world's largest employer of labour with an estimated gross domestic product of 11 per cent.

She stated that this year's theme of World Tourism Day is "Sports and Tourism," two living forces for understanding, culture and development of societies.

According to her, the theme of sports is important because sports is said to be oposite of war. While war brings casualties, sports brings about fame and wealth.

In his remarks, the commissioner added that the world tourism day was set aside to foster awareness among the international communities of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic values.

The day, she observed, also centres on sensitising the public and putting in structures that would ensure full realisation of the benefits of the tourism industry to humanity, adding that the country believes that tourism can be harnessed as a significant force for the alleviation of poverty, protection of the environment and traditional cultures giving economic value to natural and cultural heritage while creating employment and generating foreign exchange earnings.
