Gideon Brigade of Nigeria (GBN) has called on President Olusegun Obasanjo and leaders of the National Assembly to declare October 1 a national day of prayer for the country.
The group said such a gesture would pull together more than a hundred million Nigerians to praise and thank God for the nation at the National Stadium, Surulere.
In a statement signed by the spokesman of the Brigade, Rev. (Dr.) Bode Akinlein, the gathering would be an avenue to show gratitude to God for the recent discovery of mineral resources, such as crude oil, bitumen and tantalite in Ekiti State. "This is very important today because, if we all believe that our nation has come all this far by the very good grace of God. Also, in order to show our appreciation and acknowledgement of the fact that our large deposit of mineral resources including crude oil, bitumen and the tantalite recently discovered in Ekiti State are all free gifts of the Almighty God to us (Nigerians) to simply make our nation rich and self-sufficient," it stated.
The group stressed the need to set apart our National Independent Anniversary Day to praise and thank God, noting that "our nation parades almost all her governmental officials as either Christians or Muslims who believe in the existence of this one holy God."
GBN enjoined all Nigerians to join in this move using this medium to ask God for solutions to the country's present predicaments which have culminated in poverty and insecurity in the country.
"Also to ask God to show our political, religious, military and traditional leaders the way out of our nation's multiple predicaments since independent including the lack of visionary leadership, widespread corruption, unemployment, mismanagement and misrule which has led to poverty and insecurity of life and property in the country," he added.
