Association Boards to Go Next Month
By Femi Solaja

The first causalities of the major restructuring that is being expected within the country's sports sector are members of all the 27 sporting associations under the Ministry of Sports and Social Development.

The Director of Sports Development in the Ministry, Chief Patrick Ekeji told THISDAYSports in Abuja last week before the flag off of the Abuja-Keffi route of the ongoing Maltina Cycling tour that the boards of all the various associations would be dissolved by the end of October.

He expressed his dismay at the performance of most board members whom he said had no business being members in the first place and promised a better composition of new ones that will be in place before the end of the year.

"By now the members have overstayed their tenure more so that the Olympics has ended. But we have to wait till the end of the Para-Olympic Games, after which we will review the performance of all the Federations before taking the next line of action.

"Our intention is to involve all stake holders of each sport because we wanted all shades of ideas to be present in the composition of the new boards.

"We have discovered most of the present members are just there for what they can grab from the sport without giving anything in return. Members are supposed to seek for sponsorship to prosecute their various activities, instead they still run back to the sports ministry for assistance. I think if we continue like this it will not take us anywhere," he said.

Chief Ekeji also said that the Ministry hopes to carry out some reforms in the running of the federations because some genuine board members who are willing to assist the sports are not too pleased with the administrative set up and were forced to step down quietly.

"If we must be sincere with ourselves, there has to be major administrative changes and it will go along with the re-composition of a new board and all these are some of the perequisite that will enable private inves-tors to come in and assist the various sports," he explained.

Ordinarily, if going by the constitution establishing the various boards, they are supposed to be dissolved after the Olympics and the re-composition of the new boards will usher in the election into the board of the (NOC).
