Golden Adesoji increases Nigeria gold haul
By Gbolahan Dada Athens
Tuesday, September 28, 2004

Hot legs, Adesoji Adekundo at the weekend, confirmed his rating in the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games when he won another gold medal in the men's 200m T12 event, thus making it his third gold medal for Nigeria in the Games.

The Nigerian had won gold medals for Nigeria in the 100mT12 and 400m T12 in the Games before the Sunday's feat at the Athens Olympic Stadium.

His medals now pushed Nigeria up on the medals table with five gold, three silver, and three bronze medals as at press time on Monday evening.

Apart from Adesoji, Silver Ezeikpe picked a gold for Nigeria on Sunday in the javelin event after Lucy Ogechukwu opened the floor of achievement for Nigeria last week.

Amarakuo Solomon Ikechukwu was also at his best on Monday in men's -100kg in the powerlifting event but he was denied the gold in his final attempt as he had to settle for the silver after lifting 235.0.

But in all, Adesoji's performance seems to have overshadowed the rest. He's the only athlete in the Team Nigeria to perform such feat even as he's partially blind, he made sure all his promises were fulfilled in Athens.

The Nigerian was overwhelmed with joy when he won the third gold. He said in spite of the injury he sustained in the first race, he was able to perform the historic feat.

"My plan was to be close to the first athlete and work with my hands because I have serious pain in my hamstring. I thank God for allowing me to be here amongst the best athletes in the world. If I wasn't injured the world record would have been history. The sky is the limit for me", he told Daily Sunsport in Athens.
