Daniel hinges democracy on judges' inputs
From Charles Coffie Gyamfi, Abeokuta

OGUN State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, yesterday tied the sustenance of the nation's democracy to contribution of judges.

The governor, who spoke at the opening of the yearly conference of Federal High Court judges in Abeokuta, said that judges should see to prevalence of law and order.

Daniel, who was represented by his deputy, Alhaja Salmot Badru, stated: "In this regard, I urge you to continuously strive to pursue and uphold objective of founding fathers of Nigerian judiciary, which was to raise a crop of fearless, hardworking, focused and dedicated judges."

Daniel charged the bench to always ensure that it was positioned on cutting edge of national and intellectual discourse.

"By so doing, you would have succeeded in providing the much needed legal and moral platform for judging all forms of conduct so that our young democracy could be nurtured to maturity and vibrancy," Daniel told the judges

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Rosaline N. Ukeje, explained that the yearly conference served as a forum for judges to frankly discuss issues affecting courts and judges.

According to Ukeje, Federal High Court was first established in 1973 in Lagos but now has 24 other Judicial divisions and five pioneer judges.
