Bayelsa Assembly may summon ex-health commissioners
From Willie Etim, Yenagoa

THERE are indications that past health commissioners in Bayelsa State may soon be invited to appear before the House Committee on Health, Women Affairs and Social Development.

This is the fallout of the committee's explanation of deplorable state of health facilities given by Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ayibapreye Baralatei, in the Assembly.

Meanwhile, as the committee continues it evaluation of 2004 budget performance of the Ministry, members are to visit the Central Medical Store for an on the spot assessment of medical equipment on ground.

During a meeting with officials of the ministry, chairman of House Committee, Hon. Opusiri Otobo, had demanded evidence of medical equipment purchased by the ministry, monthly audited accounts and percentage of disbursement of over N30 million reportedly approved by state Governor, Chief Diepreiye Alamieyeseigha, for training of specialist doctors undergoing specialist programmes in universities across the country.

The committee had sought to know the state of projects so far implemented under the Health Systems Development Project II and the mode of payment of counterpart funding between the state government and World Bank.

Members of the committee expressed worry that some newly upgraded comprehensive health centres to cottage hospitals were not functional due to lack of equipment and urged the commissioner to furnish them with a proper inventory of all health facilities and equipment without delay.

Otobo, who reiterated the committee's efforts to make the people feel impact of the huge amount expended by government on health, stated that there would be no sacred cow in the investigation going on as it was poised to invite all past health commissioners and any other person for questioning.

Baralatei had told the committee that his ministry was operating within limits of available resources and promised to make all relevant documents available to for scrutiny.
