VC seeks return to excellence as UNN marks founders' day
AS preparations gather momentum towards the University of Nigeria Nsukka's (UNN's) Founders' Day celebrations, its Vice Chancellor, Professor Chinedu Nebo, has underscored the need to restore its glory, modernise operations and reward excellence.
The university's Founders' Day will also incorporate a special reception / lecture in honour of Prof. Charles Soludo, Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria. It will also provide "an opportunity to celebrate its own and raise funds from all its stakeholders and friends, many of whom are prominent members of the society", the vice chancellor told journalists in Lagos yesterday.
Nebo pointed out that UNN, as one of Africa's leading universities, should not be left to decay in order to maintain its tradition of excellence.
The celebration of the 44th (this years) Founders' Day begins on October 7 and ends on October 9, during which some 600 past first class graduates will be honoured and a N500 million e-learning fund will be launched. The ceremonies climax with the lecture in Soludo's honour to be delivered by Prof. Ekpo Akpan on October 9.
UNN was founded on October 7, 1960, but the convocation ceremonies have been shifted to March next year to make way for the Founders' Day celebration and special reception / honour for Soludo and other distinguished alumni, Nebo said.
According to him, first class graduates of the university are being honoured to "ignite the intellectual flare of the young ones and Soludo incidentally is one of such distinguished alumni."
He listed some of the first class graduates to include Dr. Dora Akunyili, Mr. Tunde Lemo and Chief Otega Emerhor.
"We want to also raise funds to meet the requirements of modern learning and computerisation. Specifically, we want to join the information super high way and be internet accessible 24 hours daily so that we (student and member of staff) can benefit from being linked effortlessly to all centres of learning worldwide, including libraries", the vice chancellor said.
"We will also institute a Hall of Fame, the first in any Nigerian tertiary school. The events will include music and drama", he added while calling on alumni and well wishers who could not be reached to attend.
