OWERRI— AUTHORITIES of National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has given approval for the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, to mount National Diploma programmes in Co-operative Studies and Public Administration.The approval was communicated to the institution’s Rector, Dr. Onyekwere Nwankwo, in a letter TEB/PRO/F.3/A/24/Vol.VI/52, captioned “resource inspection visitation” and signed by Bilam N. Niriyusfor the Executive Secretary of NBTE.The Board disclosed that the approval followed the “resource inspection visitation” of the Polytechnic, carried out by its accredited officials from 11th to 14th May, 2004."Approval has been granted your institution to commence the following programmes, ND Co-operative Studies and ND Public Administration, with effect from 2004/2005 session”, NBTE boss stated.
The Board however directed the Polytechnic management to correct what it termed some “observed deficiences in respect of the approved programmes”.The Polytechnic was directed to immediately recruit one confidential secretary who has a minimum of National Diploma or its equivalent in Secretarial Studies, as well as a clerical officer with minimum of General Certificate of Education (GCE) or its equivalent, for the department.
For the Public Administration Department, NBTE directed the Polytechnic management to provide additional staff offices with full complement of furnishings and repair or replace the broken down teaching aids in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC). The institution was also charged with the responsibility of recruiting a confidential secretary for the department with a minimum of National Diploma in Secretarial Studies and clerical officer with a minimum of GCE or its equivalent."You are allowed to admit a maximum of two streams of not more than 40 students per stream, for each of the approved programmes.
The approved programmes will be due for initial accreditation when their first student intakes are in their third or fourth semester of studies”, NBTE boss stated. While directing the Polytechnic management to “rectify the deficiencies stated in respect of the programmes and submit them to the Board for the initial accreditation when due”, the Executive Secretary also warned that “failure to satisfy this requirement within the stipulated two-year period, will disqualify your institution from further admissions into the programmes.
