    Ndigbo converge in Owerri

    •For Igbo Day

    EMMA OGU, Owerri

OWERRI, the Imo State capital, is agog as Ndigbo from different parts of the country converge in the town for the grand finale of the annual Igbo Day celebrations today.

The event, an important one on the Igbo calendar, features leading Igbo from different walks of life.

Expected at the august event are the five governors of the South-East states. They are Governors Achike Udenwa (Imo), Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia), Chris Ngige (Anambra), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi) and Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu).

Together with other Ndigbo, the state chief executives will host leaders and representatives of pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Middle Belt Forum, Ijaw National Congress (INC), Middle Belt Forum and South South Forum expected to solidarise with Igbo.

Already, Owerri is in celebration mood for the event which will hold at the Dan Anyiam Stadium.

The celebrations which kicked off last Sunday with church services in different states in the South East climaxes today with a carnival.

Meanwhile, chairman of local organising committee (LOC) of the event and Imo State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mr. Chris Okewulonu, told journalists yesterday that facilities for the event were ready and arrangements had been concluded for its success.

Okewulonu visited the stadium yesterday with the Secretary of the National Planning Committee of the ceremony Mr. Uche Anioke.

He stated that his committee is satisfied with the extent of preparations and assured the expected guests that the ceremony will be successful.

Part of activities slated for the grand finale include posthumous awards on past leaders of the ethnic nationality.

There will be speeches and goodwill messages from both the governors and leaders of groups from other parts of the country.
