CHARLES ABAH
WEST African
Examinations Council (WAEC) yesterday released results of the May/June 2004 West
African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) with those of 102,315
candidates withheld for alleged sharp practices.
The council also partially released the
results of 51,383 candidates.
About 1,052,672 candidates sat for the
examination nationwide.
Already, plans are also at advanced stage
by the council for the commencement of on-line registration by candidates.
WAEC’s Head of National Office (HNO) Mr.
Tunde Oloyede announced these in Lagos yesterday, saying the withheld results
represented 9.72 per cent, while the partially released ones accounted for 4.88
per cent of the entire results.
Mr. Oloyede, who disclosed that results of
1,001,289 candidates representing 95.12 per cent have been fully released,
enjoined them to check their results from today.
He, however, remarked that cases of those
involved in alleged malpractice would be forwarded to the Nigeria Examinations
Committee of the Council, assuring that the committee’s decision would be
communicated to them in due course.
On the on-line registration, Mr. Oloyede
said the initiative would help stem the incidence of stress as well as errors
recorded by candidates in registration.
"This project will revolutionise the
enrolment of candidates for our examinations as the process will become
stress-free and error-free. Capturing data accurately from the registration
stage will, definitely, obviate most of the queries which arise during the
conduct of examinations and processing of results," he said.
It would be recalled that 95,283
candidates results were withheld in the May/June 2003 WASSCE even as 88,260
candidates had their results partially released.
Over one million candidates sat the
examination of which 950,105 persons had their results fully released.
At the 2003 November/December WASSCE, the
body withheld 37,932 results for alleged sharp practices last February. Also the
results of 46,243 candidates were partially released by the council.
