NIGERIA
Telecommunication Limited (NITEL), Ebonyi Territory has stated its readiness to
adopt stringent measures towards the recover of N24 million debt owed it
by subscribes in the state.
NITEL Territorial Manager in Ebonyi State,
Samuel Nmaegbu stated this weekend while briefing journalists on activities of
NITEL in the state. Nmaegbu, an engineer lamented that highest debtors of the
organization are federal ministries and parastatals.
According to him following a presidential
directive, NITEL is now in the process of recovering telephone lines of debtors.
"We are particularly lucky here. In other
states it is the state government that owes most, but here, the state government
is the best, they pay as at when due, as if they know that we mostly rely on
them. So we commend Governor, Sam Egwu. He has never owed us a kobo. Our main
headache is federal ministries that are here. They are owing the chunk", Nmaegbu
said, adding that NITEL is now fully commercialized and self reliant making it
imperative for costumers to pay their bills promptly.
Obasanjo directed NITEL to reconcile its
accounts, and take appropriate steps to recover the debt.
"So we are in the process of that now", he
said warning that there will be no sacred cows as the presidency’s directive
does not give room for anybody to be spared. He said Ebonyi NITEL Territory has
a total of 3000 lines, 8000 of which are integrated services digital network
(ISDN) leaving only 2200 ordinary lines. Nmaegbu also disclosed that the 2200
ordinary lines are fully subscribed while the ISND lines which has more
facilities than ordinary lines but costs more, are available to any person who
can afford it. The implication, according to him is that there are no lines for
applicants at the moment. Noting that old lines are usually recovered from
defaulters and re-allocated to new applicants.
On the delay in the sister company, M-tel
extending its GSM services to Ebonyi State, the Territorial Manager explained
that the problems is caused by the analogue system which currently links
Abakaliki to Enugu.
He stated however, that the problem would
soon be over as M-tel is now tinkering with the idea of linking Abakaliki to
Enugu main switching centre through V-sat radio equipment.
"As soon as that is done, then they will switch on. I
understand equally that the contract for the job has been awarded. GSM has more
detailed analysis which cannot be carried in analogue radio system; it must be
digital radio system," he explained.
