Imo youths flay SSS harassment of Ojukwu

    EMMA OGU, Owerri

IMO Youths Movement (IYA) has deplored what it called "Present harassment and intimidation" of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu by the Federal Government using the State Security Service (SSS).

Making the condemnation in a press statement in Owerri weekend, the group said the situation becomes worrisome when attempts are made to insult the person of Ojukwu.

"To us, he remains one of the most courageous Igbo man dead or alive, Nothing whatsoever can change what he has done for the Igbo. We commend his resolve and will despite all odds. No matter whose ox is scored, his "will" cannot be broken. We can bet our life on that", the statement signed by Osundu Webb, leader of the association and Ajoku Okey secretary general said.

According to the group, the idea of a sovereign state of Biafra is a product of innumerable factors, which include, maginalisation, victimization and exclusion.

Also listed by the association as factors, leading to agitation for Biafra are what it called, imposition of political leaders, in the aftermath of massive rigging of 1999 and 2003 general elections and Igbo economic disempowerment.

The youths pointed out that agitation by movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, (MASSOB) is a "continuous, laudable and realizable venture unless the grievances of Ndigbo are addressed".

The MASSOB struggle, it said is a collective effort of an aggrieved people against injustices by successive governments and the present one had visited on them.

According to the statement, "intimidating and harassing reputable Igbo leaders cannot solve the problem adding that government must be courageous and bold enough to address pertinent questions of Igbo reintegration into Nigeria 34 years after the civil war.
