Numan crisis: Bafyau lied, says Atiku

By Chesa Chesa

Correspondent, Abuja

Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday took a swipe at former NLC President, Paschal Bafyau, asking him to find more productive things to do rather than accusing the number two citizen of fuelling the religious crisis in Adamawa State.

Bafyau had accused the Vice President of complicity in the deposition of the former Hama Bachama, Freddie Soditi Bongo, and for taking sides with Muslims during a tour of the affected areas in Numan.

A statement signed on Atiku’s behalf by his Special Assistant on Media Affairs, Dr. Onukaba Adinoyo-Ojo, said Bafyau’s allegations were lies coming from an idle mind known for fanning religious and ethnic hatred.

“It is clear that Bafyau does not know the Atiku he was accusing. The Vice President is well known all over the world for being detribalised and open-minded.

“Unlike Bafyau, the Vice President has never been known to fan the embers of ethnic or religious hatred. We would like to appeal to Bafyau to find something more productive to do rather than engage in name-calling and baseless allegations”, said the statement.

Onukaba said his boss had rather worked tirelessly with the Adamawa State government to reconcile all warring parties in Numan.

He said: “As a statesman, Atiku has never taken sides in the crisis. The Vice President cannot be held responsible for the fate that befell the former Hama Bachama”.
