Air Force chief rules out armed forces from monetisation scheme

By Maxwell Oditta

SeniorCorrespondent,Lagos

The monetisation policy instituted by the Federal Government would not affect members of the Armed Forces, a top military source has quoted the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Jonah Wuyep, as saying.

This disclosure by Wuyep was said to be the key point of private sessions between the Senate Committee and the hierarchy of the Nigeria Air Force Logistics Command Headquarters, Ikeja.

The sessions, held at the weekend at the Command Officers Mess between the Senate Committee on theAir Force led by Senator Ibrahim Wakala-Mohammed, officers and other ranks, hadraised a poser on the policy in relation to the military.

The committee visited the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base to inspect projects listed in the 2004Appropriation Bill.

During the inspection, the committee also visited strategic Air Force units in Makurdi,Kaduna, Kano, Kainji and Port Harcourt.

The Senate Committee had a tte--tte with officers and men. They wanted to know about staff welfare. The main issue in the discussion was accommodation, as dictated by the monetisation policy. The sour point on accommodation was should Air Force officers retire to the barracks?

There was unanimity that officers should on retirement vacate the barracks for their colleagues still on active service. It was agreed that officers and men should own their houses, which is possible only when they are given housing allowance, said a senior Air Force officer.
