Wednesday 29, September 2004 HOME | back to previous page Babangida counsels youths on way of life   By Tom Chiahemen SeniorCorrespondent,Abuja   Former militaryPresident, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has advised youths to strive tochannel their energies and vigour in the right direction so as to safeguardtheir future and that of their offspring. Babangida said at the National Youths Peace Conference, organised by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Abuja, that it was not by accident that most of the revolutions that had brought about far-reaching changes in the world had been pioneered by the youths. Represented by a former Assistant National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Gbenga Olawepo, the former president said peace was an essential part of African culture, noting that the policy of �might is right  was totally alien to the African society. Babangida advised the youths to remain in the vanguard of peace advocacy as against violence.�When you venerate violence, it is a vicious circle of destruction,� he warned. He said the youths could be in the vanguard of ensuring the indivisibility and indissolubility of the corporate entity called Nigeria. The chairman on the occasion, Dr. Frank Ubakaba, decried the emerging culture of hate and violencein the country that he attributed to greed and over-ambition. He said too much attention was being paid to politics and the quest for political offices with little or no regard to the interest and well being of fellow human beings.       Copyright� 2004.
