Council chief warns motorists against over speeding

Motorists who drive through Ikeduru Local Government Area of
Imo State to other destinations have been warned against over speeding or risk
being arrested by officials of the council.
The Chairman of the council, Chief Samuel Anyanwu, who gave
the warning when members of the Mechanics Association, Ikeduru chapter paid him
a courtesy call, reiterated his preparedness to do everything within the limits
of the law to ensure the safety of commuters.
He lamented that this measure had become imperative as a
result of the incessant fatal auto crashes along the busy Owerri/Okigwe road.
According to him, the crashes, which had led to the death of
many people, could no longer be tolerated by his government and that as a
government that was responsible to the people, he owed it a duty to safe guard
them at all times.
He added that the check on the speed limit of motorists had
become expedient because of the approaching Christmas celebration, noting that
auto crashes were more rampant at this period than during other festivities.
The council boss warned that officials of the Federal Road
Safety Commission as well as men of the Traffic Division of the Nigeria Police
had been contacted with a view to stopping the carnage on the highways
especially within the council areas.
Anyanwu said it was the duty of every responsible driver to
ensure that their passengers got to their destinations alive rather than dead.
“I will deal seriously with any driver who flouts the speed limits on the
roads especially within my council area. I will not take it easy with them. I
am therefore warning them as we enter the Christmas period to beware of their
speed or risk jail,” he said.
He also promised to construct a park at the Ama Nwozuzu, Iho
as one of the measures that would curb auto crashes and hoped that commuter bus
operators would use the park by dropping off and picking commuters.
