One killed in Osun as PDP supporters clash over Atiku

By ’Gbenga Faturoti

Special Correspondent, Osogbo

Tragedy struck last Monday at Iree, Osun State, when one of the aides to the former Internal Affairs Minister, the late Chief Sunday Afolabi, Mr. Ponle Ebo, shot dead a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The incident occurred on the outskirts of Iree town over alleged disagreement on the erection of a signpost in support of Obasanjo/Atiku government.

During the melee, several other members sustained various degrees of injuries from gunshots. According to an eyewitness account, trouble started when members of the PDP from all the three wards in the town met at the gate of the town to erect a signpost in support of Obasanjo/Atiku administration.

Unknown to the members of the party, Ebo, a retired assistant commissioner of police, who was the special assistant to Afolabi, had a different mission at the same location. He was said to have abhorred the plan to displace “Ebo Solidarity Movement Group” his pet project, at the site.

The source added that when the information reached him that some people were already encroaching on the site, he was furious and rode on a motorbike to the scene where he ordered the people to remove the Obasanjo/Atiku signpost. The people refused, and in a feat of anger, Ebo allegedly shot the tyres of the vehicles in which the people came and fired several shots at the people, killing the victim in the process.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Osun State, Mr. Joshua Olayemi, confirmed the incident. He said the retired police officer had been arrested and now helping the police in their investigation, adding that he would be charged to court soon.
