Wednesday 29, September 2004 HOME | back to previous page Daniel charges judges to nurture democracy By Segun Adeleye reporter, Abeokuta   Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has stated thatthe survival and growth of Nigeria�s democracy rests on the judiciary,particularly judges. Daniel who made the observation at the opening of the 20thAnnual Conference of Federal High Court Judges in Abeokuta on Tuesday, addedthat adherence to the dictates of the rule of law and order should be enforcedby them. �The role of the Bench in a fledgling democracy likeours is quite fundamental to the sustenance of representative system ofgovernment. Justice is the end of government. It is the end of civil society.It ever has been and ever will be pursued until it be obtained, or untilliberty be lost in the pursuit,� the governor quoted Alexander Hamilton. Daniel, who was represented by her deputy, Alhaja SalmotBadru advised that judges should uphold the objectives of the founding fathersof the Nigerian judiciary by being fearless, focused and dedicated. In her remark, Chief Justice of the Federal High Court,Abuja Division, Justice Roseline Ukeje said the rotation of the judges�conference among the twenty-four divisions was to prepare them foracclamatisation in case of posting. �The annual judges� conference is set apart tobring together, once in a year, all serving judges of the court, so as to renewacquaintances, to review the vision, the mission, the achievement (if any) andthe direction of the court,� she concluded.   Copyright� 2004.
