ICPC Prosecutes 76, Ex-Ministers Included
From Yinka Kolawole in Lokoja
Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Honourable Justice Mustapha Akanbi, has said the commission is already prosecuting more than 76 persons including some former ministers, and senior public officers.
Akanbi, who made the revelation at a workshop organised by the Federal Ministry of Inter-Governmental Affairs in Lokoja yesterday said "some governors, ministers, directors, and other senior public officers are under investigation."
Speaking on the theme, "inculcating the culture of accountability, transparency and probity in top government officials, Akanbi revealed that a former chief medical director of the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, has been convicted for misappropriation of funds.
He emphasised that already, his commission is collaborating with government agencies like the inland revenue in tax returns and checks, and this exercise has generated a lot of funds that hitherto would have been lost.
He said "there is also the investigation of some judges and other judicial officers resulting in the dismissal of some."
He stressed that many of the cases in court are stayed by orders granting stay of proceeding pending appeal, of which some have gone as far as the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.
He pointed out that his commission has placed an Amendment Bill to the ICPC Act 2000, painstakingly prepared and submitted by the commission to the National Assembly since June 2003, of which the commission is already awaiting its prompt passage to put bite to the commission's work and the fight against corruption.
Akanbi noted that the greatest hope for this nation is for every Nigerian to commit himself to the process of creating a new people and a new nation with great and noble virtues.
He, however, enjoined Nigerians to take the initiative and imbibe the virtues of honesty, integrity, transparency and good conscience.
