Emulate Adebo's Virtues - Obasanjo
From Josephine Lohor in Abuja
President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday urged Nigerians to emulate the qualities of honesty, modesty, hardwork, commitment and patriotism which late Chief Simeon Adebo embodied.
Speaking at the first lecture in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the death of the seasoned administrator and diplomat at Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Obasanjo noted that Adebo's "hardwork and other qualities made him to rise to the highest post in the Western Nigeria Civil Service."
He described him as a "totally detribalised man," whose services were greatly sought after by the Central and Eastern Regional governments.
Obasanjo also said he found Adebo's "honesty and modesty so humbling, engaging and captivating," adding that he was transparently honest and committed.
He referred to Adebo as "a father, confidant and valued adviser," adding that he was also "good at identifying and utilising talents."
He said the gap created by the death of this "icon, exemplary, simple, unassuming African leader," would be difficult to fill, noting that Adebo's legacy was that while his "earthly possessions were moderate, he built monuments in the minds of people everywhere he served," adding that he was "a man worthy to be emulated in every sense of the word."
Chairman of the occasion and former Minister for Defence, General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), described Adebo as a "thorough, meticulous, time-conscious great man who deserves to be remembered."
Guest lecturer and Executive Director of United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), based in Geneva, Dr Marcel Boisard, spoke on training as a key universal requirement to improve skills and strengthen institutions.
He also read United Nations' Secretary-General, Kofi Annan's goodwill message to the occasion which noted that Adebo served with distinction as Nigeria's Permanent Representative at the United Nations and as executive director, UNITAR (1968-72).
Widow of the late diplomat, Chief Mrs Regina Adebo, thanked God for keeping her alive and all those who had stood by the family, especially President Obasanjo.
