UBTH Doctors Accuse FG of Discrimination From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City Association of Resident Doctors of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), has accused the Federal Government of pursuing a deliberate agenda which was discriminatory against the UBTH and strangulating the hospital financially. The doctors also wondered at the rationale behind the decision of the Federal Government to grant loan to Ghana and Sao Tome and Principe, while facilities at the UBTH, other hospitals and medical institutions across the country had practically grounded to a halt. Addressing newsmen yesterday on the reasons why they have embarked on an indefinite strike action since Friday, the association's President, Dr Philip I. Ugbodaga, noted that UBTH resident doctors are owed about N300 million emanating from monthly shortfalls in the payment of their salaries. The doctors, who said they embarked on the measure as a last resort, observed that the Federal Government has always excluded the UBTH from hospitals chosen as centres of excellence, where special rehabilitation and development efforts are directed on regular basis in the six geo-political zones. Ugbodaga, who is also the first Vice-President of the national association, said UBTH was again excluded from the list of benefiting hospitals the last time (the third phase) such special medical centres were designated by the Federal Government.
