Numan Crisis: Atiku Cautions Bafyau
From Josephine Lohor in Abuja
Vice President Atiku Abubakar has asked the former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Pascal Bafyau, "to find something more productive to do rather than engage in name-calling and baseless allegations."
The Vice President said this while reacting to a series of unwarranted and unprovoked attacks on him by Bafyau, who has not offered "any evidence," but continued to accuse him "of solely being responsible for the problems in Numan, Adamawa State which led to the recent deposition of the Hama Bachama, Freddie Soditi Bongo and appointment of the former Commissioner of Information in the state, Mr. Asuph Zadok, as the new Hama Bachama."
The Senior Special Assistant (Public Communications and Media Affairs) to the Vice President, Dr Onukaba Adinoyi-Ojo, spoke on behalf of Atiku yesterday, stating that the allegations against the Vice President that he visited Numan and spoke only to the Muslims, implying that he took sides with the Muslims cannot be true.
"The Vice President is well known all over the world for being detribalised and open-minded. The Vice President has never been known to fan the embers of ethnic or religious hatred," he added.
Adinoyi-Ojo stated that "the Vice President's role in the matter (Numan crisis) has been that of a peacemaker. He has worked tirelessly with the state government to reconcile all the warring parties and restore peace and harmony to Numan.
"As a statesman, Atiku has never taken sides in the crisis. It is therefore untrue to accuse the Vice President of partisanship. The Vice president cannot be held responsible for the fate that befell the former Hama Bachama.
"Vice President Atiku Abubakar is a political leader who brings together, under one umbrella, diverse ethnic groups in Adamawa State and Nigeria. Atiku's detribalised posture has earned him enormous influence and admiration. His infectious humility and openness has been hailed by all and sundry.
"Atiku Abubakar remains a peace promoter not only in Adamawa State, his immediate constituency but in Nigeria and beyond," he added.
