LG Boss Hails Joint Account System
Sokoto
From Ahmed Oyerinde in Sokoto
Chairman of Illela Local Government in Sokoto State, Alhaji Saidu Nansi Illela, has hailed the emergence of joint account system as the best thing that ever happened to local government administration in Nigeria.
Speaking with newsmen at the council's secretariat yesterday, Nansi lamented that some of the past elected local government chairmen were only collecting money from the federation account without having anything to show for it.
The chairman said it was in realisation of this that the idea of joint account system was mooted and entrenched in the constitution adding that the system was a good thing that must be allowed to stay.
To buttress his claim, the chairman disclosed that when he assumed office January this year, he discovered that the council's account had been overdrawn to the tune of over N4m as a result of the activities of the past elected chairmen.
He, however, added that so far, he has been able to settle N1.5 million out of the money in question promising to continue to do his best towards ensuring that the council is financially healthy.
Nansi said within the period under review, he has been able to repair most vehicles belonging to the council including the fire fighting vehicle which, according to him, was grounded for more than eight years.
In a similar development, the chairman of Gada Local Government, Alhaji Garba Muhammed told newsmen yesterday in an interview that his council executed projects which have direct bearing on the lives of his people under the joint venture funding.
The projects, according to him, included the construction of Gada-Tsitse road, rural electrification of seven villages and drilling of 4 number boreholes for each ward in the local government area.
Muhammed added that the council, under the joint account system, also purchased drugs worth N10 million for distribution to health institution free of charge.
It also constructed the Kware Salame road at the cost of N2billion.
