Aviation safety advocacy group, Nigerian Aviation Safety Initiative (NASI), has petitioned the National Assembly over the proposed national flag carrier, Virgin-Nigeria, raising fears that its promoters have remained anonymous while hiding under the cloak of British entrepreneur, Richard Branson.
NASI, in a petition addressed to the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, said the proposed national flag carrier posed imminent threat to the security and safety of international civil aviation.
"Nigeria aviation industry watchdog group, Nigerian Aviation Safety Initiative (NASI), seeks to bring to the security and safety of international civil aviation by a new national/flag carrier being midwife by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
"The proposed new carrier, Virgin Nigeria airlines which has been stated to commence operations by October 1 and whose main promoters have remained anonymous whilst hiding under the cover of Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic Airways is soon to be issued with an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) by Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) under the instruction by the Ministry of Aviation even when it is yet to meet compliance with due certification process and is indeed yet to be incorporate as an airline in accordance with international aviation practice and the rule of law," the petitioners alleged.
NASI observed that it was extremely concerned that given the lack of transparency as circumstances surrounding the emergence of the proposed national flag carrier, the safety and security of its operations cannot be guaranteed.
"Some of the burning issues under contention which have elicited a court injunction but is being disregarded and treated with contempt are the non-settlement of pensions and gratuities of over two thousand (2,000) employee of the Nigeria Airways, currently undergoing a liquidation process, and the non-settlement of salary arrears of over seventeen (17) months," the petitioners added.
