FG Rehabilitates 400 Roads
Lagos
By Fabian Madu
Federal Government has said it has completed the rehabilitation of 400 roads through Operation 500 across the federation.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Works, Mr. Adeseye Ogunlewe, at the induction of President, Lagos Anglican Diocesan Guild of Stewards (LADGOS), Chief Willy Akinlude and other officers.
According to him, "we have completed about 80 per cent of the 500 roads embarked upon and the ministry would soon increase it to 1,000 roads."
He refuted the claim that some roads in the northern part of Nigeria are neglected, saying the claim is totally spurious.
He added that his ministry started the Operation 500 Roads from the north and has spent N500 million on Sokoto-Gusau road which is currently under construction.
Ogunlewe said Federal Government is distributing money equally and giving equal treatment to each state of the federation, adding that there is no discrimination at all.
His words: "we are treating each zone, each state equally, and we are distributing money equally. We gave N10 million to Federal Controller of Works in each state and there is no discrimination at all."
He however noted that Federal Government would not neglect roads, explaining that roads are "our assets." Adding that government has set aside $3 per day to take care of depreciation of roads, he said these roads if not taken care of would definitely go bad.
He said government would soon begin work on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, immediately after the rainy season.
Commenting on policemen mounting illegal road block on the federal highways, Ogunlewe said he had met Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, but he believed nothing can be done to withdraw the police on the highways due to increasing rate of crime in the country.
According to him, "I am so concerned about too many policemen on the federal highways and I have met with IGP, but the problem of Nigeria is that you cannot eat your cake and have it. If we remove these policemen on the road, we are going to be in trouble because they also perform very very good duties on these roads.
