Govt Celebrates World Tourism Day

Secretary General of the World Tourism Organisa-tion, Mr. Francesco Frangielli and Dr. Jacques Rogge, President of International Olympic Committee (IOC) have jointly promised to renew their commitment to reinforce partnerships and collaboration and put tourism on the world map.

They made this promise in Uyo during the World Tourism Day celebration at Ibom Hall.

In an address delivered on their behalf by Minister of Commerce and Tourism, Ambassador Franklin Ogbuewu, the duo agreed that this year's theme: '"Sports and Tourism: Two Living Forces for Mutual Understanding, Culture and Development of Society" served as a common goal that build bridges of understanding between different cultures, lifestyles and traditions. This, he noted, promoted peace and goodwill among nations as well as motivating and inspiring young people by providing entertainment and enjoyment to relieve the pressures of daily life to large sections of the population.

According to him, the cooperation that IOC and WTO started in 1999 to strengthen the link between tourism and sports, noting that WTO and IOC in celebration of the day called on all to join in promoting a solid partnership between tourism and sports for the development of society.

In her address, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Commerce and Tourism, Mrs Akon Eyakenyi, commended the state government for putting in place structures that would ensure that tourism thrives in the state and commended the governmentt for accepting to host the celebration.

The commissioner called for necessary financial support from Federal Government, private sector and international agencies for the growth of the sector.
