PDP Denies Attack on Journalist Benue Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has denied a newspaper report (not THISDAY) that thugs suspected to be PDP members attacked and held the family of a correspondent hostage in Makurdi. He said the reporter, who made the claim, was noted for fabricating stories. According to Ortom, some of the false reports filed by the reporter which have been refuted include the story that the former state coordinator of the National Poverty Alleviation Programme, Mr. Simon Shango, had fled the state because the state government was after him, pointing out that both Shango and the state government denied the story. He added that the party has had to lodge complaints to both the correspondents' chapel and Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state about the reports but that the two bodies had said they could not call the reporter to order because he was not their member. Ortom said PDP believed in the sacred role of the media in a democratic setting and would never approve of its members sending thugs after journalists. He said it was not tenable that the said reporter would be attacked in Makurdi by any member of PDP because of an interview granted to his paper by Senator J. K. N. Waku through an Abuja-based journalist. Ortom said his party would use the right of reply rather than thuggery in responding to false reports and assured journalists of the respect and cooperation of the party in the state.
