I have lived long enough to know when someone is trying to sell me a bridge. But, what do I know? I am not a doctor or nutritionist.
Not too long ago, Dr. Robert Atkins introduced his high fat, high protein and low-carbohydrate diet. Now, everywhere you go, from McDonalds to the most upscale reataurants, you see packets of fatty foods labelled "Atkins compliant." There is even a new food pyramid called the Atkins Pyramid. Atkins preached that the way to weight-loss, a healthy heart, and healthy arteries was through his high-fat, high-protein, low-carbs diet.
Then, two days ago, we learned that Dr. Atkins was obese at the time of his death and he had heart problems gazoo. A few weeks earlier, the widow of Dr. Akins got into a public spat with the Mayor of New York after the mayor suggested that Dr. Atkins died from his own diet and looked fat to him. Dr. Atkins was about 246 lbs when he died. The orange juice industry is up-in-arms with Atkins diet exponents because the Atkins people discourage the consumption of orange juice, which they say contains carbohydrate sweeteners.
This from the Times:
quote:Ten months after his death, diet guru Robert Atkins is at the centre of more controversy. A medical report showing he was obese when he died has been seized on by Atkins opponents with their own views to promote. At stake is control of the $40bn-a-year diet industry and the profits of America's food giants
FOR A MAN WHO changed millions of lives, Robert Atkinss own ended in an awful mess. Last April he slipped on an icy pavement, banged his head, suffered (possibly) a heart attack, then went into a coma from which he never emerged. He died within a week.
And then the trouble started. The state of Dr Atkinss heart and arteries instantly became a subject of fevered speculation, for he it was who launched the low-carb, high-protein Atkins diet 30 years ago, and practised what he preached. But his family ruled out an autopsy. The effect of a lifetimes righteous consumption of steak, eggs and bacon to the exclusion of bread and pasta, by the man who swore this was the surest route to weight loss and coronary health, was never to be made public.
Did Dr. Atkins not follow his own diet plan, or was it his diet that killed him? Are you an Atkins diet subscriber?

I am not a fan of Dr. Atkins, but some clerification was made last week about his death that he did not die obese. As a matter of fact his pyramid before his death was approved by the FDA. I particularly do not follow any recommendation by one nutritionist, I compare all and follow what is for the best interest of my body mechnism. The most important thing is that we should be aware of what we consume.
