Premier League: Enyimba Close in on Rangers

Daily Trust
(Abuja)

June 20, 2003

Champions Enyimba of Aba spanked Gabros 4-0 at home on Wednesday in a rescheduled Premier League match to move within a point of league leaders Enugu Rangers who slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Iwuanyanwu Nationale.

Enyimba have now scored 40 points from 19 matches while Rangers are on 41 points from 22 matches.

Nationale were the biggest gainers in the standings on Wednesday when they jumped from seventh place to third courtesy of the 2-0 victory over Rangers.

They have now recorded 34 points from 22 games.

Gabros, on the other hand, dropped to fifth place following their worst defeat this season.

[quote]Football Association Threatens to Ban Okocha, Kanu.

Vanguard
(Lagos)

June 20, 2003

Onochie Anibeze

Secretary-General of the Nigeria Football Association, Taiwo Ogunjobi has shown that he could be pleasant to players but also ready to deal with them decisively if any of them wanted to hold the nation to ransom or resort to double standards. Ogunjobi showed his true self when he vowed to direct coach Christian Chukwu to stop inviting Austin Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu to the national team following problems arising from settlement of flight ticket refunds.

Some players had put up claims up to $4,000 for flight from Europe. One player even claimed that he flew to Nigeria from his base for $5,000. The players were home for the Nations Cup qualifier against Malawi and stayed back to play the international friendly against Brazil. When the NFA refused to pay the bills, insisting that refunds would only be based on the face value of the tickets, the players held meetings to forge a common front for their case. Ogunjobi immediately turned red-hot and called Chukwu to stop inviting Kanu and Okocha.

He fumed this way: "I have made sure that these players get their entitlements and I'm proud to say that I've not had any problem with them since I took over as chief executive of the association. And we've had peace since this era until now. Now, players have started agitations over wrong claims. And I want to believe that Kanu and Okocha are spearheading this. Nothing like this had happened until now that they are coming to camp since this new era. I'll not succumb. I respect their talents but no one person is indispensable. I'll not succumb and if the team says that they would not play, let them stay put in their rooms and let Nigerians judge everybody. It is only that Chukwu is a gentleman, holding the team together otherwise, I'll not take it. Everybody can go."

Ogunjobi was really fuming. He meant his words and Chukwu knew. He quickly called a meeting and Okocha and Kanu reached an understanding with Ogunjobi. The players pleaded with Ogunjobi to understand their case and not see them as unionists causing confusion in camp. The matter was resolved and they agreed that ticket refunds would be based on face-value of the tickets. Ogunjobi then lifted his ban that lasted for few hours. The soft-spoken NFA scribe is generally seen as humble and not strong willed surprisingly showed that he could be firm. The matter was resolved amicably and the players ready to always honour national calls without qualms.

SAD NEWS

Cameroon star Foe dies
Foe collapsed in the semi-final against Colombia
Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe has died after collapsing during an international match in France.
The 28-year-old fell to the ground unchallenged in the 72nd minute of a Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia in Lyon.

He was treated on the pitch before being stretchered off and receiving further treatment, including mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and extra oxygen.

Foe spent last season on loan at English club Manchester City from French club Olympique Lyon and also played for RC Lens.

Medical staff are believed to have tried to restart his heart for 45 minutes but without success.

You couldn't meet a nicer, more fantastic person than Marc Foe
Harry Redknapp
Portsmouth manager
An autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of his death.

Manchester City chairman John Wardle expressed the club's distress at the sad news.

"Foe was wonderful to have around the club," Wardle told BBC Five Live.

"He always had a smile on his face and was humble as well.

"He also scored our last-ever goal at Maine Road and he will go down in history for that."

FOE FACTFILE
Born: 1 May, 1975 in Cameroon
1994: Makes Cameroon World Cup squad
1997: Joins French side Lens from Cameroon's Canon Yaounde
1998: Breaks leg, missing World Cup and potential move to Manchester United
Jan 1999: Joins English Premiership side West Ham for 4m
May 2000: Moves to French club Lyon for 6m
2002: Member of Cameroon's African Nations Cup-winning side and World Cup squad; July - joins Manchester City on loan
2003: Plays 35 times for Man City, scoring nine goals, including the last-ever goal at Maine Road
Foe also played under current Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp while at West Ham.

And Redknapp said on Wednesday: "You couldn't meet a nicer, more fantastic person than Marc Foe.

"He was a special boy - I just can't believe it."

After paying a tearful tribute to Foe, France beat Turkey 3-2 in the other Confederation Cup semi-final.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has said that the final will go ahead.

But France captain Marcel Desailly has questioned whether or not the game should take place.

"I would totally understand if the Cameroon team refused to take part in the final."

On Monday July 28, 2003, a judge in Bochum, Germany sentenced Daniel Kohl of Germay to three years and four months in prison.

Kohl was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm to Daniel Nivel, a French police officer during the 1998 World Cup in Lens, France.

The beating left Nivel in a coma for several weeks, blind in one eye and with brain damage that still causes him difficulty in moving and speaking.

Real Madrid, which paid a staggering $41 million to buy David Beckham from Manchester United, has recouped more than one-quarter of that amount even before the new season has begun.

The Spanish champions returned home from their four game Asian tour Monday. The tour netted the nine-time European champion $11.28 million in appearance fees, and also considerably boosted its reputation, and hence its merchandise sales, in Latin America, China, Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand.

Brazilian World Cup-winning midfield dynamo Kleberson finally received his work permit and will join Manchester United in time for this weekend's English Premier League season against Bolton Wanderers.

Kleberson, 24, was acquired from Atletico Paranese of the Brazilian League for $8 million. He is seen as a potential replacement for Juan Sebastian Veron, the Argentine midfielder sold to Chelsea for $24 million.

Elsewhere it's reported that Sporting Lisbon had agreed to sell 18-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo to United for $13.6 million.

It all began with the legendary Kofi Mfum and Ado Odamitey. Then came the magnificent Ahmed Polo (Fanmi Ahmed) and Abedi Pele. Following the footsteps of these Ghanaian soccer greats, 14-year Freddy Adu, just as his biography is being written and before dawn, had thrashed Korea 6-1 in today's opener of the U-17 World Cup in Finland.

Meanwhile, the Sierra Leoneans say "They will know us now."

I knew the Biafranigerian under 17 squad weren't prepared to go through the second round or quarter final stages of FIFA's tournament in Finland as they lost 1-0 to a well organized Argentinian squad led by Lautaro Formica. According to the following report:
quote:
Nigeria took the field without any major surprises in their ranks. Coach Augustine Eguavoen had obviously made up his mind to stick to his guns, only making one change during the 90 minutes. The experienced Nigerian supremo would no doubt have preferred to celebrate his 38th birthday with a different result today, but try as they, too many of his changes appeared to be carrying knocks and never got into their strides.

In a game played in a fine spirit by both sides, the South Americans proved both tactically and technically superior. Led by their inspirational and highly dependable captain Lautaro Formica, the new-look Argentina made Nigeria sloppy by comparison.

Japan shuts out Biafranigeria, 3-0, in Tokyo. Argentina bypassed Uruguay, 3-1, in Florence, Italy. Austria thrashed Costa Rica, 2-0 in Vienna behind goals by Edi Glieder and Roman Walber.

Elsewhere, in FIFA Under 17 tournament in Finland, Spain trounced U.S., 2-0 and as a result U.S. plays Brazil on Sunday for the quarterfinal. The Golden Eaglets are homeward bound.

Sorry, Argentina blew a 2-0 lead to be defeated by Spain 3-2, denied Tocalli's squad an all-South American Final on Sunday. Goals by Lucas Biglia and Ezequiel Garay gave Argentina a two goal lead by half time. On the other semi-final Brazil, shut out Colombia, 2-0, for a Brazil-Spain Under-17 Title Game.

The bids to play host to the 2010 World Cup have been submitted and the winner will be an African nation--most likely South Africa. The World Cup has been held in every continent except Africa. Meanwhile South Africa presented videotaped messages from President Thambo Mbeki and national hero Nelson Mandela stressing its ability to host global most watched sport.

However, Libya and Tunisia also sought to serve as joint hosts, but FIFA decided against having two countries as co-hosts after numerous organizing glitches in 2002, when Japan and South Korea staged the tournament.

Is this guy better than Chukwu or did he get the job b/c he is white? He seems to have failed at the local level in England and has not really worked for a number of years.

Captain Marvel Robbo is now Nigerias coach

ABUJA: Former England skipper Bryan Robson has been named Nigeria coach for next January's African Nations Cup in Tunisia.

Robson was the most suitable of the four coaches that NFA officials discussed with while they were in England last week, a top official said on Tuesday.

Robson will sign a six-month contract, which will be renewed if he can produce results.

Robson, 46, has been out of a job since English Premiership side Middlesbrough let him go in June 2001.

The former Manchester United skipper played in three World Cups 1982, 1986 and 1990.

This will be his first job in Africa and he will be assisted by Christain Chukwu, who has been Nigeria's caretaker coach since last year.

He has accepted all our conditions and we are excited we have made the best choice, added the official.

Officials said bureaucratic bottlenecks have delayed the formal announcement as the NFA have to get approval from the sports ministry.

Nigeria are pitched against South Africa, Morocco and Benin in the first round of Tunisia 2004 kicking off on Jan 24 in Tunis.

Nigeria have won the championship twice and on both occasions they were guided by foreigners, Otto Gloria of Brazil in 1980 and Dutchman Clemens Westerhof in 1994, when Chukwu was his deputy.

Jo Bonfrere of Holland was the country's last foreign coach. He was fired in April 2001 after the Eagles lost 1-0 in Sierra Leone in a 2002 World Cup qualifiying match.

Chukwu returned for his second spell as coach to the Green Eagles last year when Adegboye Onigbinde was sacked after the World Cup Finals.

Chukwu, who guided Nigeria into next year's African Nations Cup Finals, was coach at the 1994 World Cup in the US. AFP

Believe it or not, Ghana's soccer legend Abedi Pele and Senegalese singer-songwriter Youssou N'Dour who composed the official France '98 World Cup song will make Africa's draw for the 2006 World Cup.

Two-time women's world cup champion and Olympic gold medal winner Brandi Chastain and former Galaxy and Mexican national team goalkeeper Jorge Campos will conduct the CONCACAF draw.

Michael Schumacher of Germany and world entertainer Sting will draw for Europe. Bum Kun-Cha of South Korea and Yasuhiko Okudera of Japan will draw for Asia.

The draw will be held December 5 in Germany.
