The FIFA world cup 2006 final has come and gone but the dust will never settle on the red-carding of French play-maker Zinedene Zidane (Zizou). The Argentine referee dismissed Zizou for butting big Italian defender Materazzi on the chest.

Materazzi has refused to divulge what he told Zizou that provoked the French captain but it was clear from TV replays that he certainly said something that made Zizou turn round in rage. According to the British Guardian there are suggestions that Materazzi called the great Zizou �a terrorist�. Zizou�s folks are originally from Algeria.

While it is scant consolation that Zizou has just been announced winner of FIFA golden ball i.e best player of the tournament ahead of some Italian footballers, it is to be hoped that FIFA will launch a full scale inquiry into what was said.

FIFA cannot claim to want to stamp out racism with a lot of tokenistic gestures while refusing to take concrete actions on the dehumanising abuse of arguably one of her most popular ambassador. Materazzi could not hold down a place in English mediocre club Everton and if insulting Zizou and then faking death for a red card is his path to cheap publicity stunt then he need to be called to order.

Italian football is steeped in cheating and corruption. It is a part of the Italian game to feign injury when the opponent is on the ascendancy just to take the steam off the attack and allow them time to regroup. It served them well against the Ghana where the player who was stretchered off miraculously sprinted back in minutes to score against Ghana.

Italian football is notorious for criminal activities. Just yesterday three of Italy's best club sides were demoted to class B teams after they were found guilty of match fixing. FIFA should certainly review the racist and provocative comments by Materazzi, which led Zidane to act. Italian hoodlums should not be allowed to ruin the fun that football represents to all of us.
