Hurricane Mimiko is the greatest disaster that would befall Nigeria ever since the Civil War. This hurricane if it was to be rated by the foreign geologists would be put on a level 5. This is not on account of its very odd and out of place name being Mimiko (Americans prefer the female sounding names e.g. Katrina, Rita). This disaster shall cause havoc and destruction across the whole of the West African region.
Hurricane Mimiko refers to the plan of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, Minister of Housing of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which will render over 1388 families homeless overnight and cause a major catastrophe in Nigeria. Elementary physics teaches us that for every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction.
Had Americans known that Hurricane Katrina would lead to the displacement of 500,000 people, they would surely have built stronger levees to prevent such a disaster. Minister Mimiko's plan will deliberately displace thousands of citizens, with a clear understanding of the consequences. Having analyzed the situation in Nigeria on the ground, together with our foreign political analysts, we want to provide a clear picture of the consequences of this negligent act.
The illegal sale of Eric Moore Towers, 1004 Housing Estate, Bar Beach Towers, Alagbon Towers, Awolowo Road Towers, Mulliner Towers and Bar Beach Towers was done with the primary intent of destroying the last standing sense of a united Nigeria in Lagos and not just mere greed as most people think. The federal government housing estates house Nigerians that cut across all tribes and religions, working in various ministries, government parastatals and armed forces.
It is the spirit of togetherness in these estates that has enabled the nations senior civil servants to protect the concept of ONE UNDIVISIBLE NIGERIA consciously and unconsciously. Concerned Youths is convinced that the sinister people involved in this plot recognized this unity and consequently saw it appropriate to displace the civil servants in order to cause chaos and provoke the balkanization of Nigeria. The prospect of such division is not unfounded, as is evidenced by the US Intelligence Report that the country would disintegrate within 15 years. The government white paper indicated that the houses were to be sold to the occupants. The housing minister has clearly disregarded this policy to discourage and in turn disband the bond that exists between tenants of the estates.
Over the past few months, this same cabal has been sensitizing the Lagos landlords not to rent houses or sell land to foreigners. There is a clear policy emerging to drive the 1388 families back to their respective states of origin. The course of action is to spread discontentment and cause the disaffection in the land in favour of the Federal Government.
Mimiko has abetted in the strategic and multiple phased plan to disintegrate our great country of Nigeria. Those behind this grand scheme are solely interested in acquiring power and position in a chaotic and divided state. Concerned Youths is calling for the SSS to promptly investigate this matter. The EFCC, with the help of their Financial Investigative Unit (FIU), should find out who are those that funded the purchase of the estates. We believe that that would provide a direct clue to the people behind this great diabolical arrangement. We believe that that would provide a direct clue to the people behind this arrangement. The ICPC should pay close attention to this case as we also strongly believe that a number of the conspirators are members of the present government. Concerned Youths will mount its own investigation into the financial dealings of the sales of the government property in question. We shall reveal any information on the true identity of these mischievous individuals who have designated us as pawns in their power games.
However, the youth of this nation will not sit idle and watch such blatant manipulation.. Today, we declare that the spirit. of apathy and hopelessness that has pursued and consumed our generation in the polity of things in Nigeria is DEAD forever. The youths of Nigeria represent over 40 million people and it is the power of those people we shall harness in making our mark and establishing our say in Nigeria. We refuse to be confined to silence and inaction in the face of an enemy that wants to destroy the unity of our country and everything that we believe our president has worked hard to preserve.
We advise the honourable Minister of Housing, Dr Olusegun Mimiko to resign his appointment on or before the 30th of September in the interest of national peace and security, and to ensure the transparent investigation on his handling of the sales of the government properties. We would also like the presidency to establish a special committee comprised of representatives of the current residents of the estates as well as elderly statesmen in order to implement the White Paper on the disposal of all the Towers and the 1004 Housing Estates. This committee should have for a deadline the end of October at which time the keys and title deeds of all the flats would be handed over to those tenants who choose to exercise their rights under the owner-occupier policy.
We shall host, by the grace of God, an Independence/Victory Party in Eric Moore Towers on the 1st of October, 2005. Nigerians from all walks of life are cordially invited. We have also launched our website www.concernedyouths.org, dedicated to keeping the world abreast of the struggles and the achievements of youths as a whole.
