Re: PMP Condemns Genocide in Anambra State
Washington DC 08-08-2006: The Peoples Mandate Party (PMP), condemned the on going chaos, breakdown in law, order and security in Anambra state. Dr. Arthur Agwuncha Nwankwo Chairman of the Party, delivered this during his speech to the first Summer Caucus Meeting of PMP USA, at the Washington Hilton Hotel, in Washington DC. Dr Nwankwo, who plans to issue a comprehensive pronouncement on this matter on return from his USA trip, described the killings as genocide. He stated that we will be shying away from our responsibilities if we fail to observe the total insincerity and insensitivity of the federal and state governments toward the on going genocide in Anambra state. This situation is unacceptable, and here by strongly condemned. We will be fully addressing this matter, in the days ahead when I return home.
He also lamented the current state of affairs in the country after eight years of PDP led government and demanded a new direction and leadership. He said, we cannot catalogue all the afflictions of the Nigerian State. To do that will make us sad indeed. Nevertheless, we cannot afford to bury our heads in the sand, like the ostrich and pretend that all is well. Where, we may begin to ask, has all our national wealth gone to, given the sordid nature of our public infrastructures and social utilities; the poverty, ignorance and disease devastating our people; mass unemployment and dys-functional economic system; and the reduction of the country from a donor to a beggar nation?
Where have democracy, good responsible and accountable government, justice, equity and fair play gone to? What has happened to the educational system, health care, the spirit of scientific inquiry and technical progress, sustainable agricultural production and industrial advancement? Why are so few Nigerians very rich and the rest of the population reduced to living a life of destitution?
There are many more questions like these, and answers to them are difficult to find. Those who over-simplify them do not understand the complex nature of our environment. They may, in the long run, appear as emergency patriots who see politics as an all comers affair, as an open field where mercantilist and opportunistic interests are projected and realized. We do not belong to this class of people, believing as we do that the governance of the polity is a life long agenda, only to the embarked upon by those with deep moral strength, personal courage and transparent integrity, Politics for us is not an emergency national assignment, a game without rules, except power intrigue and illicit conspiracy. Politics is for us the art of the possible, of using the advantage of experience, education, foresight and vision for the fulfillment of social objectives.
He insisted that politics in Nigeria has lost its people focus and made ideology a dirty word. He stated that, we believe that politics is the art of state power, but such power must flow from the people, whose interests it ultimately serves, and who retain the sovereign right to make participatory and representational change as provided for in the constitution. We do not intend to hold power in trust for the people, for that will lead to its arrogance and abuse. Rather, we intend to put the people where they truly belong: at the center-point of power. This is our vision, our ideal and agenda.
Most people are too quick to write off ideology, believing it to be a long list of strange sounding nonsense, most often with an ism at the end. But this is not so. Ideology is the sum total of all received notions, values, and beliefs about life, developed over decades of interaction, and embodying certain regular attributes defined by race, religion, class or ethnic identity. No society can make progress without a centralized ideology world-view, without the tailoring of national passions and commitments towards the realization of universally accepted ideology ends. This is what makes nations great, both in the past and in the present. Our ideology is simple. We believe that Nigeria is for every one of us, and must be so developed as to maximize collective potentials. Democracy is our key idiom, the pass word to the attainment of this ideal. Egalitarianism is our social contract, our common bond and affinity with the people. Pedagogically, therefore, the idea of democracy in an egalitarian social processes, to the extent that a sense of belonging is achieved, and to the degree that social parasitism will not only be a thing of the past, but also that individuals are adequately rewarded for their productive endeavours irrespective of creed, sex, religion or ethnic identity.
Dr. Nwankwo acknowledged PMP USA, made up of a wide range of accomplished individuals from different walks of life, and expressed hope that the new era is here. He said, We are proud to announce that there now exist, amongst us, a new generation of Nigerian patriots who are prepared, at all times, to be judged by their belief in and performance of these sacred tasks, not in any future times, but in the present age. These new Nigerian patriots are to be found in the peoples mandate party (PMP). I see in this group today, consummate professionals, professors, Doctors, scientists, lawyers, health care professions, investment brokers, mortgage brokers, artists, civil servants etc., who are on this platform for ideological compatibility and not for instant financial gratification
In conclusion he said, In order to make concrete this testament of faith, and leave on record the element of our social contract with our children and generation unborn, we must harness all our talents and expertise. In this regard: We charge you with the responsibility of creating the most resourceful policy research group to facilitate the Programs of PMP, as well as the restructure and development of Nigeria We approve of your monthly issues Blitz agenda which commences next month with issues related to economic and poverty alleviation challenges We approve of your co-sponsorship of policy programs with The Solon Institute USA.- a premier think thank based here in Washington DC We approve your participation in the Partys 2006 convention in September, in Enugu, Nigeria, when the flag bearers of the party from local to federal levels will be ratified.
