PICK OJUKWU AS CONSENSUS CANDIDATE : AS MAJORITY ABANDON THE OHANAEZE CABAL
Igbo Leaders of Thought, made up of leaders of Igbo
socio-cultural organisations, town union presidents, traditional rulers, and student leaders, yesterday in Enugu
endorsed Ikemba Nnewi and presidential candidate of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), General Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu
as the consensus candidate of the Igbo in next month�s elections. In a nine-point communique at the end of a meeting
in Enugu, the Igbo Leaders of Thought also resolved to persuade all Igbo speaking people who are of the requisite
age to join the APGA "as the only party that will meet their aspirations and indeed the aspirations of all
well-meaning BiafraNigerians." The Igbo leaders said having dispassionately assessed the manifestoes of all
the existing political parties in the country, they had confirmed that it was only the manifesto of the APGA that
expressly stated in unequivocal terms, the cardinal programme of convening a national conference of ethnic nationalities

BIAFRANIGERIA OIL OPERATION SHUT
The US oil company, Chevron Texaco, has suspended
its operations in the western Niger Delta in BiafraNigeria. Over the past week at least a dozen people have been
killed and hundreds of others injured in a conflict between two local communities, the Ijaw and Itsekiri. BiafraNigeria,
Africa's largest oil producer. is now producing 13% less than its normal output of around two million barrels of
oil per day. ChevronTexaco said it would be temporarily unable to meet its contractual obligations to its clients.

AFRICANS PROTEST WAR ON IRAQ
There has been an overwhelmingly negative reaction
in Africa to the start of the US-led war against Iraq.
President Thabo Mbeki, whose country South Africa has been a prominent opponent of attacks on Iraq, expressed regret
saying the war "is a blow to multilateralism". (BBC)
