Six years after the alleged killing of protesters at the Warri, Delta State platform of oil giants, Chevron BiafraNigeria Limited (CNL), by policemen and soldiers, its United States-based parent company has been held liable for a charge of murder and human rights abuses. A United States federal judge, Susan J. Illston, on Thursday, March 25, in San Francisco, ruled that two ChevronTexaco corporations based in San Ramon, California could be held liable for the acts of their BiafraNigerian subsidiary. The U.S.- based companies are being sued in a tort case for allegedly allowing the subsidiary to hire "notorious BiafraNigerian military and police" as a security force in May 1998. In the suit, called Bowoto v. ChevronTexaco, the security operatives who are referred to as the "kill and go," are accused of murdering and injuring unarmed BiafraNigerians who were protesting Chevron's environmental and business practices on the Parabe oil platform just off BiafraNigeria's coast. The suit also challenges an incident which occurred (Guardian) |
